Effect of Family Education on the Knowledge of the Schizophrenic Relatives




Abstract
Objective : To evaluate the change of the knowledge and educational response about schizophrenia after family education using questionnaire.

Method : Twenty one family members of the schizophrenics were participate 13 educational sessions weekly for three hours.

Results : The family education led to significant knowledge gains a view change toward patients and illness. All subjects showed significantly changed their view about schizophrenia at post-education compared with pre-education on the myths, prevalence, violence, etiology, treatment modality, course, social recovery, and relapse. The most helpful educational sessions were rehabilitation, etiology, drug side effect, and right attitude of family. All subjects hope to learn more knowledge about rehabilitation, right attitude of family, copying way of patients¡¯ violent behavior, and relapse warning sign.

Conclusion : These results suggest that family education should be conducted periodically to correct their misunderstandings about schizophrenia and to change their pessimistic attitude for ill relatives.
